Local favourite and Fide Master Soumya Ranjan Mishra won the title, securing eight points from nine rounds in the 1st Kalinga Open All-India Rating Chess Tournament, which concluded at OAS Association Bhawan in Bhubaneswar today.
Despite being held to draw in the last two rounds, top seed Soumya clinched the title, which fetched him the top prize of Rs 10,000. Krishan Soni finished runner-up with 7.5 points and became richer by Rs 7,5000. Top 30 finishers shared a total cash prize of Rs 50,000.
Film actor Mihir Das and chess IM Swayangsu Satyapragyan handed over the trophy and cash prizes at the closing function. Around 200 players from Orissa and its neighbouring states participated in the five-day tournament, which was organised by Kalinga Chess Academy.
